Office Policies

Mount Vernon Internal Medicine encourages a friendly relationship between our patients, our physicians and our staff based on open communication. Please feel free to discuss matters of office policies with our practice administrator.

Voice messages left after 3:00 pm may not be returned until the next business day.

Emergencies

An MVIM physician is available for emergencies at night and on weekends. You may reach our answering service after hours by dialing our regular office number (404) 252-4100. Please utilize our regular office hours for non-emergency calls and prescription refills.

For an obvious emergency, you should call 911, or proceed directly to the nearest full service Hospital Emergency Room.

Hospital Admission

If you should require hospitalization, you will be attended to by a hospitalist physician. Hospitalists are specialized internal medicine physicians whose sole focus is inpatient care. We work closely with these physicians at both Northside Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital. After you are discharged, continuity of care will be maintained through our office.

Periodic Preventative Medicine Health Exam

A thorough history and physical exam allows us to carefully evaluate our new and existing patients. These examinations should be performed periodically for all patients. The frequency, usually every year, and timing of comprehensive exams will vary, depending upon the age, health habits, the existing conditions and the past medical history of the individual. If you are unsure when you should have such an exam, please call our office for assistance.

Telephone Calls

It is our policy for our physicians not to interrupt patient care for telephone calls except for urgent or emergency calls. Non-urgent calls will be returned in a timely fashion. Please only leave one message per question/concern, as multiple messages can delay our response. Please note that we are unable to provide medical diagnoses via telephone.

Prescription Refills

Prescription pickup hours are 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

MVIM receives multiple prescription refill requests on a daily basis. Please contact your pharmacy and request that they send a refill request to our office electronically. If your pharmacy is unable to satisfy this request, you may request a refill via the patient portal or you may leave a voice message for a refill. Please provide us with your name, the telephone number of your pharmacy, the name of the medication(s) you need refilled and a telephone number where you can be reached.

Please allow between 48 - 72 hours for us to process your request.

Referrals

Referrals can be very time consuming. If your insurance plan requires a referral for diagnostic tests or a referral for a Specialist visit, please allow one week for processing. Same day referrals will only be completed on an urgent basis. Almost all insurance plans do not provide post dated referrals, therefore, please allow us time to complete the referral before your appointment to another facility.

Fees

Our fees are comparable and competitive with other internists in the Metro Atlanta area. Each fee that we charge is based on a percentage of the amount allowed by Medicare. If you have any questions regarding your insurance responsibilities, please feel free to contact Galen Advisors using the number listed on your billing statement. No fees beyond insurance requirements are taken at this office.

Insurance and Billing Statements

There can be a great deal of confusion and frustration when dealing with managed care and other insurance issues. We suggest that you read your insurance policy and familiarize yourself with your insurance benefits so that noncompliance denials can be avoided. Not all insurance plans are equal. Your plan benefits may change depending on how the insurance company negotiated the contract with your employer group. We do require a copy of your current insurance card(s) and a picture ID before your visit with one of our physicians.

Galen Advisors electronically files our claims to your insurance plan on a daily basis All claims and invoice questions should be directed to Galen Advisors. Please refer to the number for Galen Advisors located on your billing statement.

Our physicians are participating providers for Medicare and many of the Medicare Advantage Programs. We will file your Medicare claims and crossover claims to your Secondary or Medigap carrier.

Laboratory Testing

Mount Vernon Internal Medicine has contracted with LabCorp to provide services in our office. LabCorp manages the lab and employs the personnel who work in the lab. If you receive a statement from LabCorp, or you have any billing questions regarding labs performed in our office, please contact the LabCorp billing office listed on your statement. If your insurance plan requires our office to utilize a specific lab other than LabCorp, please let us know at that time.
